Road trips are a part of life for many Americans. And, for many of us, they are anticipated with pleasure. So, if the All American Road Trip is in your future, here are some ideas to consider.
A-Always plan for extra time spent in traffic jams. This way you won’t get stressed out if there is a bit of a wait; and, if you are fortunate and do not have any traffic back-ups you will arrive early.
U-Unlimited patience. Don’t let road rage get the best of you. Getting mad at the person who cut you off hurts only yourself. After all, they weren’t concerned about fellow drivers when they cut you off and getting mad can cause a larger problem for you because you will focus on your anger and could miss something important…like that slower moving vehicle up ahead.
T-Think about your fellow road trippers. Pay attention to traffic patterns and drivers around you so you are not guilty of causing an accident or road rage.
O-Opportunity may only knock once. If you have the chance to travel-even if it means a bit of a road trip-do it! There are many beautiful highways and byways to be explored and enjoyed.
T-Think outside the book. While travel guides are great, don’t be afraid to do some exploration of your own. You may discover a great new restaurant, park or museum that has all your favorite things.
R-Road trips are a great learning experience for all, but the wise traveler recognizes that everyone has different taste and interests and plans activities that appeal to all.
A-Attitude is everything. Even if road trips are not your favorite thing, having a good attitude makes everything more fun. In fact, numerous studies have shown that having a positive attitude makes even the most horrific situations more bearable. Be thankful for the freedom to travel. America is an amazing country with a plethora of places that can be enjoyed be travelers of every age.
V-Venture down the road not taken. If you have a GPS then you can explore that interesting road without fear of getting lost.
E- Expect the unexpected. Road trips are a lot of fun, especially if you are open to adventure and change. If the weather goes from sunshine to rain ruining the day at the waterpark, go to the movies, a children’s museum or other indoor entertainment and enjoy yourself.
L-Linger and Listen. Unless you have a tight itinerary with no room for improvisation, take the time to stop and visit with your fellow travelers along the way. After all, unless you absolutely must arrive at a specific time, there is no reason to forgo time spent visiting with the kids or travel companions at a playground or over a meal. Also, listen to your vehicle. Pay attention to the speedometer, gas gage, water levels and other instruments and systems on your vehicle and make corrections and adjustments when/if necessary. You don’t want to cut a trip short because of vehicle failure.
