“Roll the windows down, turn the radio up, let the wind blow through our hair. There's a moon tonight and a road outside, Baby we're gettin' out of here…" Yes, there is much to be said and enjoyed when it comes to traveling the open road. Of course, for many of us, travel means filling the car up with gas every few hundred miles. However, vehicular technology has made great strides and now there are several choices in fuel and engines. One of the most advanced is that of the electric vehicle.
The electric vehicle has come a long way since its inception a century ago, but today EVs are becoming less of a novelty only, and for many, a way of life. This because today’s electric vehicles have an assortment of benefits ranging from having reduced greenhouse emissions to a nearly non-existent CO2 footprint. In addition, electric vehicles are no longer small compact cars with little or no room for their passengers.
However, there are still a few concerns for the EV. These concerns, though relatively minor, are that the batteries will die, that the majority of cars slow down after 100 miles and they are expensive-even with the federal tax credit. That said, if you are considering an EV, you will want to be sure to check out these corded cars:

The Chevrolet Volt- With a price tag of $41,000 (before the tax credit) this EV has a 150 horsepower engine, can go from 0 to 60 in 9 seconds and can travel 40 miles before needing to be recharged. However, the Volt also has a 1.4-liter gas engine, which GM refers to as a “range extender" so actually you can go as far as you would like. The car has great stability and handles well, thanks to its 400-pound liquid-cooled battery. This is perfect vehicle for those using it primarily for the daily commute for errands around town. Also, in recognition of its high price, GM also leases the car for $350 a month as well.
The Nissan Leaf- Going from 0 to 60 in 10 seconds, a range of 100 miles and a price tag of only $25,280 the Leaf is thought to be one of the best EVs on the road today. The Leaf can hold up to 5 people and is similar in size to a Honda Civic. The car is designed to give drivers plenty of warnings so that being stranded is easily avoided-as long as the driver heads the information!

The Tesla Roadster 2.5 - Having a range of 245 miles between charges and the ability to go from 0 to 60 in 3.9 (or less) seconds, it is no wonder that the price tag is $101,500 (after tax credit). In addition, the Roadster has a 288 -horsepower motor and is an absolute joy to drive. If you are a racing fan, then take the leap and purchase the sports car package, which allows it to beat the top speed of a Porsche 911 GT3.
The electric vehicle is certainly one the latest novelties on the road today. No, not everyone is driving them, yet, but those who do, are certainly enjoying them. The next time you have a road to explore, why not test-drive an EV to see what you think? You are likely to be pleasantly surprised.
