Perhaps one of the most prevailing mantras-regardless of the generation- is "I gotta be me!" Everyone wants to express themselves in one way or another. For some it may be in their choice of attire, others may show their colors in their hairstyles, and some in their type of music. But, for those who love vehicles, one of the most common ways is with a customized look.
Sometimes referred to as hot-rodding your ride, this customization can be any type of change made to the vehicles mechanics or body style. It got its start in the 1930s when ingenious vehicle lovers decided to modify their vehicles by replacing their running boards and fenders with cycle fenders. Later on, common changes were simple actions such as changing the paint job from basic colors like black or white to bold orange-yellow or candy inspired tones.
Today, customized cars are as popular as ever. Thanks to television programs like Pimp My Ride, Trick My Truck and Overhaulin’ consumers are more aware than ever before of ways they can customize their vehicle. Here are just a few of the ways people are expressing themselves through their vehicle.
The re-built engine: This one is an oldie but goodie! Since the early days of the automobile, people have been swapping out the engine of their vehicle to do what they wanted. Whether it was Ford Mustang motor in a sedan or replacing the RX7s with turbo LS2’s, this is one of the longest standing-and perhaps the most admired- methods of customizing your car.
Paint jobs and decals: From chartreuse green with bold blue flames, to vehicles painted to look like the cars one’s favorite television show or movie stunt car, color customizations are still considered cool! Of course, you can take yours take a step further and have decals designed to suit your style or choose from thousands of ready-made decals to give your ride the look you want.
HID Lights: Hi Intensity Driving lights have become popular in recent years not only for their aesthetic value but also because they last longer, produce more light and are more power efficient than regular lights. Of course, they also cost more, but what you will spend in installation you will recoup in not needing to replace them as often.
Split hoods and bonnets: These hoods are made from two halves that open in the middle much like a French door. And while it adds nothing to the speed or performance of a vehicle, it adds much to the style. In fact, if you plan to show your vehicle a custom car show, the split hood is a must. However, keep in mind that this custom job is not recommended for a vehicle you plan to drive around town or as part of your daily commute!
Giving your ride a sense of style is great way to express yourself and these are but a few options to consider. Car customization is not just the latest fad, but an activity that has brought its participants hours of pleasure as they dreamed, designed and ultimately drove their custom ride. From classic to contemporary, and cool to conventional there are many choices in the world of the customized car. What look do you have in mind?
